London Borough of Croydon

Portland Road Regeneration

Introduction

Croydon Council has been working in partnership with the People of Portland Road Group, to prepare a draft Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan for Portland Road.  The draft Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan has been prepared to suggest ideas about a new strategic approach and actions for securing the regeneration of Portland Road as an asset serving the local community.

Location:

Portland Road in South Norwood is located approximately 3 kilometres north east of Central Croydon and 15 km from the London City Centre.  South Norwood adjoins the Borough boundary with Bromley.  Portland Road extends south from the South Norwood District Centre.

The study area extends from the Norwood Junction Station and railway bridge in the north along Portland Road down to Woodside Green in the southern part of the study area.

The map below defines the Portland Road Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan study area.

Issues and visions of the Strategy:

The draft Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan addresses issues which include:

  • Vacant shops
  • Neglected, rundown and poor appearance of buildings
  • Fear of crime
  • Graffiti and vandalism
  • Lack of a community centre
  • Lack of short term car parking

Five visions have been identified in the Strategy to enhance the area, which include:

  1. A high quality built environment and public realm which creates a unique sense of place
  2. Vibrant and lively area which attracts local residents and visitors through its leisure, cultural and retail opportunities
  3. A safe and secure environment for all members of the community
  4. Accessing the area will be an easy, convenient and pleasant experience
  5. Opportunities for the community to meet and socialise through the provision of attractive and accessible public spaces and community events.

Please refer to the action points in the draft Regeneration Document and Action Plan, for an idea of how the above visions will be achieved.

Timing:

The public consultation period for the draft Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan has now ended.

Further information is provided in the section on Community Consultation.
