London Borough of Croydon

Planning control - an overview

Croydon Planning Control is responsible for the determination and monitoring of planning applications and associated applications (such as listed building consent and advertisement consent) submitted to the council under the Planning Acts.

It comprises three teams covering the northern, southern and central areas of the borough and each team deals with:

  • planning applications - over 3,000 applications each year
  • advertisement applications
  • preparation of tree preservation orders and applications to carry out work on protected trees or trees in conservation areas
  • planning appeals - including producing statements and evidence on appeals against the council's planning decisions
  • enforcement of planning control - including investigating complaints relating to planning matters and service of statutory notices
  • applications for consent to alter or demolish listed buildings
  • applications for lawful development certificates
  • pre-application advice.

The head of planning control has delegated powers to deal with a wide range of applications, including residential extensions, changes of use and advertisements.

Applications not dealt with under delegated powers are reported to fortnightly Planning (formerly Development Control) Committee meetings for decision.

The committee meets in the Council Chamber in the Town Hall. Meetings are open to the public and applicants and members of the public are allowed to speak in accordance with agreed procedures.
