Development constraints
Land contamination is usually caused by previous industrial use or the deposition of waste. As environmental restrictions were not as stringent in the past as they are today, it is possible that such sites may still have contamination issues associated with them.
The development of contaminated land will normally only be granted on condition that the contamination is cleaned up to a standard that makes it suitable for the new use of the land.
More information about contaminated land, a guidance note for developers and the services we offer can be found at the Pollution Control – Contaminated Land pages of the council's website by following the 'see also' link at left.
