Community infrastructure levy

Development to help pay for schools, community facilities and better transport in Croydon

Croydon Council has published its proposals for a Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) which will require most new development to make a financial contribution towards new or improved facilities required by Croydon's development and growing population. This will include schools, community facilities, better transport and improved parks and open spaces.

The consultation period on the draft proposals ran from 16 January 2012 to 13 February and is now closed. The council is now assessing the representations made.

The council wants to ensure that additional funding for necessary infrastructure can be provided without generally slowing investment or preventing new development coming forward. It hopes to implement the new CIL system in April 2013. This will be in addition to the Mayor's levy which starts in April 2012 to raise funds to help pay for Crossrail.

The Community Infrastructure Levy is designed to be paid after planning permission has been granted and development is actually starting on the ground. It will generally be payable by developers and/or landowners who benefit from planning permission. It will not apply to buildings that are changing use.
