What is the building control system?
The Building Control section is responsible for making sure that building regulations applications are made when required, and that work is carried out in accordance with the regulations. The section has a raft of tools available to combat unauthorised and contravening work including legal notices, notices to open up work that has already been done, the right of access to any property within the borough where offending work is thought to exist, fines, injunctions and convictions.
How do I report unauthorised building work?
If you think that building work is being undertaken without approval, or contrary to the requirements of the regulations, you can use our Unauthorised building work form (see the 'Report it' section). Alternatively, you can contact us by telephone or letter see 'How to contact us'. Please provide as much information as you can, particularly regarding the address, location and nature of the danger, as this will assist us in dealing with the complaint quickly.
Confidentiality
Unauthorised work and contravention complaints are always treated in the strictest confidence. If you advise us of a scheme, we will not pass on your details to the owner of the property.
Submit a regularisation application
If you or a previous owner carried out works to your property without approval you can submit a Building regularisation application (see 'Apply for it').
