What it is

Parks to be Proud of is a major project aimed at improving the quality of Croydon's local parks. It is run by the council and gave local people the chance to vote on which of Croydon's 127 parks should get a share of £1.5million….the next stage will allow people to have a say in what the money gets spent on.

Why we're doing it

Parks are there for everyone to enjoy. They're great, fun places for people of all ages. When we ask people what makes for a great place then parks always feature highly. We already have many fantastic open spaces, and to prove it Croydon recently beat Edinburgh to the title of 'greenest large city' in the UK.

This money is new investment over and above the ongoing programme of general parks maintenance that goes on throughout the year - and the council thinks it is important to let local people have their say in where and how it is spent.

How it works

Up until 24 December people could vote via postcards or online. There was a shortlist of 15 parks, five each in the north, central and southern parts of the borough. The top parks in each of the three areas will receive a share of £1.5million.

We will shortly be going out again to talk to local people in detail about what they would like to see happen in these places. There will be a long 'shopping list' of possible improvements, and the top-rated ones will be the ones that we will look to put in place.

In April we will unveil the master plans for each park chosen, and the work will take place over the following year.
