National Year of Reading 2008
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go. " Dr. Seuss, " I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"
2008 is National Year of Reading. It's a chance for everyone to read more and to share the pleasures of reading with their families and friends. It's a good time to join the library too. It's free to join and it's a great way to get your hands on lots of fantastic books to take home and read.
You can also take part in a host of reading related events from April to December.
How do I join my local library?
Anyone can join, membership is free - just bring with you one thing that shows your name and address such as a driving licence, gas, electric or water bill, Home Office letter, benefit book or bank statement.
Where can I find out more about reading?
Click on the Croydon libraries link or call in at your nearest library for further information.
How can I encourage my children to read more?
Spend 10 minutes a day reading with your children - no matter how young or old. All the evidence shows that early exposure to reading dramatically affects early learning and, most important of all, it's fun and makes you feel like the best parent on earth.
And join your local library. Membership will be really useful, especially during the school holidays. It helps you keep your children's reading habit going.
How can I find out more about reading events and activities?
Ask at your local library or download the monthly events listings below.
What's your favourite book?
To celebrate National Year of Reading, we want people in Croydon to tell each other what they like to read. Your suggestions can be added to a list of Croydon's favourite books. Click on the Favourite books link under 'Do it online' to submit your suggestions.
"We need children, adults and families to be reading because they love it and appreciate the opportunities that reading brings. It's never too late to improve your reading skills." Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls
