Library services for housebound and visually impaired people

Home library service

If you are not able to visit a library or you are visually impaired, and you live in Croydon, you can apply for a free home library service. We can put together a great package of stuff that you want from the library and deliver them to your door every four weeks.

Visits to homes

The home library service staff visit homes, day centres and sheltered housing, with a variety of library materials for you to choose from a wide-ranging selection of stock including large print books, talking books, CDs, videos and DVDs.

Large print and talking books

We have large print books in all Croydon libraries. The Central Library also has a reference copy of the weekly Big Print newspaper.

We are happy to help if you cannot find what you are looking for and will try our best to get a copy for you should we have one unavailable. Reserving large print books is a free service that we offer.

Books in braille

We can get books in braille for you from the National Library for the Blind, completely free of charge. A collection of children's books with both braille and printed text tours of our libraries. These can be reserved free of charge from any Croydon library and you can collect them from whichever of our branches is convenient for you.

Special reading equipment

The Central Library has a CCTV enlarger you can use on Level 3 to view the text of books, articles or important documents. There is also a Kurzweil machine on Level 1 that scans text and then 'reads' it back to you.
