Central Library

Croydon children's library welcomes new library users as well as our regular visitors.  We have a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with a large space for younger children, and other areas where young people can sit to read and talk. 

At the children's library children can:

  • join the library
  • use the computers (adults with a young child can also use these computers during quiet times)
  • read in a comfy place
  • do their homework
  • choose books to borrow.

Items children can borrow include:

  • board books
  • picture books
  • books for children learning to read
  • books in other languages (please contact us to find out which languages are available)
  • parents' books - a collection including books about childcare and books to help your child with first experiences and special situations
  • fiction for older children
  • teen fiction
  • non fiction for homework or general reading
  • poetry
  • reference books for homework
  • Wordwise collection for children with reading difficulties
  • books on CD/tape
  • DVDs/Videos.

We also have:

  • 8 computers with access to the internet
  • toilet
  • baby changing room
  • friendly staff with specialised knowledge of children's/young people's literature.

Children's events:

We run the following free drop-in events for young children during school term times:

  • Weekly Rhymetime sessions for babies and young toddlers, most Thursdays  during term time, 10.30-11am and repeated 11.30am-12noon; also every Saturday at 10:30am
  • Weekly Wiggle'n'Jiggle sessions for older toddlers, every Wednesdays  during termtime, 11-11.30am
  • Weekly Storytime for under fives every Thursdays  during term time, 2.15-2.45pm; also every Saturday at 11:15am
  • Homework Help Club for children up to 11, every week during term time, Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-6pm and Saturdays 2-5pm; also extra hours during half term and Easter holidays
  • Special holiday activities, including the Summer Book Trail

NB. Homework help club sessions for young people aged 9-11 is available on level 2 of the Central Library.
