Street naming and numbering
We are responsible for the naming and numbering of streets and buildings within the London Borough of Croydon. This is a legal requirement under Part II of The London Building Acts (Amendment) Act 1939. The aim is to ensure the efficient delivery of mail and goods and to make it easier to find the premises in case of an emergency.
Avoid unnecessary delays with your development
From 1 April 2009 there is a charge for this service and you will need to submit an application for an official address as soon as work on a development has begun. Charges are on a cost recovery basis only. You can find a list of our fees in the Street naming and numbering fees download at the bottom of this page. If you are not the freeholder or leaseholder of the property/site, please enclose a letter of confirmation stating that you are acting on their behalf.
The allocation of postcodes is the responsibility of Royal Mail, who only adds an address to their database once the property is occupied. You must contact them to confirm this. For more information see the Royal Mail associated link.
What requires official naming and numbering?
Where a development, redevelopment or conversion has the effect of creating or modifying the number of units for residential, retail, industrial or leisure purposes, it will require the allocation of an official postal address.
Why obtain official naming and numbering?
Without an official address Royal Mail can't allocate a postcode, essential services such as gas, electricity and water can't be provided, and Building Control will not issue a completion certificate. This could cause serious delays to your development and problems for purchasers.
