Help for older and vulnerable people

Handyperson toolbox

The handy person scheme provides a minor repairs and odd jobs service at a reduced cost to people who are over 60 years of age or disabled.

What type of work is covered?

  • Minor repairs such as renewing gates or fence panels, easing windows, decorating etc.
  • Fixing a washing line, door bell, gutter, taps, WC seat, tiles, floor boards, curtain rails etc.

Jobs are normally restricted to those lasting up to two hours and costing less than £250. The handy person service does not cover works to gas or electrical installations or gardening.

This service is available to homeowners and council or private tenants. If you are a tenant we can not carry out works that your landlord is responsible for.

What do you have to pay for?

You pay for materials used and a labour charge. If you are on certain benefits the labour charge may be reduced. The current labour charge is £25 per hour (this is pro rata - meaning you do not pay for a full hour if the job does not take the full hour).
