Meals on wheels
About Meals on wheels
'Meals on wheels' is a home delivery service of hot or frozen meals. It is designed to help maintain the independence of people who have problems cooking for themselves.
Meals are delivered by volunteers. The volunteers will always display their identification and if you have any queries they will answer them or find out the information and get back to you.
Who can have Meals on wheels?
To find out if you are eligible for Meals on wheels, please contact Social Services for Adults. Otherwise, if you can afford to pay for them and would rather make your own arrangements, you can contact Apetito directly or use another meal agency.
If your main difficulty is going out to shop for food, or you are having difficulty with other aspects of your daily life, we may be able to suggest other ways to help.
Hot or frozen meals
There is an option of receiving either hot or frozen meals.
A hot meal may be more suitable if you have limited mobility and would find it difficult to reheat a meal. Hot meals are delivered daily any time between 11am and 2pm.
A frozen meal would be suitable if you are able to reheat a meal using a microwave or an oven, or if you have a home carer who could do this for you. Frozen meals give you more flexibility as you can prepare and eat them when you like.
We will deliver a supply of frozen meals weekly or fortnightly. You can choose from a wide range of main courses and desserts.
Special diets
You may need a special diet, for example vegetarian or low fat, or just like a particular type of food, for example Caribbean.
There is a wide range of ethnic and specialist meals available as well as standard meals. Currently we can offer:
- Standard
- Low salt
- Low fat
- Low sugar
- Diabetic
- Gluten free
- Vegetarian
- Asian vegetarian
- Caribbean
- West African
- Central African
- East African
- Eastern Mediterranean
- Kosher
- Halal Asian
Costs
The cost of meals is fixed by us each year. The current cost is £2.70, but it may change.
You can pay cash weekly upon delivery of your meal or arrangements can be made for you to receive a monthly bill.
Complaints
If you are not satisfied with the meals you are supplied with, you should contact Apetito.
Alternatively, you can contact us via Social Services for Adults.
If you are not happy with a frozen meal, please keep the container and foil. The meal can be more easily identified from the serial number.
If you have a problem relating to the person who delivers your meals, please contact the Contracts Unit via Social Services for Adults.
We hope you will be satisfied with your meals but we are always keen to improve the service. Your comments or suggestions for improvement will always be welcomed.
