- Changes to your home care arrangements

You may need help at home because of a disability, illness or injury, or simply because you are getting older.
Home care is provided so you can be as independent as possible. In most cases people want to stay in their own home, and the service aims to help you do just that.
Services
Depending on your circumstances and needs, we may be able to help you with personal care and managing at home, providing services such as bathing, dressing and other personal or practical support.
If you, or someone you care for, need help and you have not yet contacted us, you should read through this page and then contact Social Services for Adults on the number below.
Assessment
Someone from Adult Social Services will contact you to discuss your needs and, if necessary, arrange a visit. You can ask a relative or a friend to be with you if you wish. This is your 'assessment'. The assessment aims to decide how best we can help. It is an opportunity for you to tell us about your circumstances and discuss your care needs.
As a part of your assessment, we will discuss the direct payment scheme. Direct payments are payments that allow you to buy services you have been assessed as needing. With this option, service users will have more control over their home care arrangements.
Once we have agreed that your needs can be best met in your own home, we will agree with you what care is appropriate and how this is provided.
Home care providers
We will arrange for a home care provider to visit you.
We have a number of contracts with home care providers who have shown that they can meet Croydon's quality standards. This is important as it will help make sure that you receive the best possible care from a reliable home care provider who is monitored and reviewed regularly.
A home care provider should:
- always listen to what you have to say, especially concerning your preferences about how and when your care is to be given
- as far as possible, arrange for your care to be given by the same person(s) each week, at times to suit you
- make sure that the people who care for you are polite, courteous, punctual and well trained
Costs
You will be financially assessed to find out if there will be any charge for community care services such as home care or day care. This is based on your income and savings. Disability related expenditure will be taken into account in this assessment. Carers may be charged for services they receive in their own right.
Any earned income (ie a wage or salary) will be completely disregarded in any assessment of charges. For advice and information, please call the Charging Helpline number listed below or see Charging for social care services.
How to pay
We will send you a bill each month for the amount of your contribution. Details of payment methods are listed on the back of the bill.
You can:
- send a cheque – payable to London Borough of Croydon
- pay via the internet
- pay at your local bank (you may be charged for this service)
- pay in person at your nearest office
- pay by telephone – 020 8667 8251 - using a credit or debit card
