London Borough of Croydon

You are here:

Sheltered housing

We aim to make sure that frail older people, who are assessed to be at risk in their own homes, can live in a safe environment and are given help to maintain their independence.  We can provide personal care and practical support as well as social activities to enhance the quality of life for the tenants.

Eligibility

Special sheltered housing is available to people who:

  1. are aged 65 and over although in certain circumstances exceptions can be made
  2. live in the borough; are eligible for registration under the Housing Application and Transfer Scheme; or are a nominee to Croydon under the Mobility Scheme, having a specific need to be near relatives or close friends in the borough
  3. have support/personal care needs which cannot be met in their own homes

Referral

Anyone can be referred for consideration as long as they meet the eligibility criteria. This includes people who are owner/occupiers; living in council property or private rented accommodation.

Contact us via Social Services for Adults on the details given below or ask a friend or relative to make contact on your behalf.

Costs

We can work out how much you can afford to pay towards rent, which includes the cost of heating and hot water, and any further services such as personal care, laundry or support services.

You will be invoiced every 28 days for any meals you receive.

The application process

A care manager will visit you to assess your care needs and if appropriate a special sheltered application will be put forward on your behalf. At this time you will also need to complete a housing application form.

Once accepted for special sheltered housing, the manager from the unit of your choice will visit you to provide more information about the unit and its activities and answer any questions you may have. The aim of this visit is to discuss your needs fully, which will help us draw up a care plan with you. The final care plan will identify all the help you need, such as assistance with personal care, shopping, housework, laundry and support with medication if necessary.

The units

There are six units across the borough, as listed below. If you wish to visit one of the units, please contact the manager to make an appointment.
