London Borough of Croydon

Choosing and paying for a care home

A care home is an establishment providing accommodation, care and/or rehabilitation for people who are unable to live independently for a variety of reasons.

The type of care offered varies from one home to another based on different needs. We own some care homes in the borough while others are owned by private individuals and voluntary organisations.

Who should I contact about moving to a care home?

If you wish to move into a care home, contact us directly through Social Services for Adults or ask your doctor as soon as possible.

A social care or health professional will assess your needs and provide advice and assistance, including advice on how you can pay for your stay in a care home and what help you may be able to receive. You can find out more about this under "Paying for a care home".

If someone is currently looking after you, the assessment will include the needs and views of your carer.

How do I find and choose a care home?

If your assessment shows that a care home would be the best option for you, we will help you find the care home that is right for you.

You may exercise personal choice when choosing a home, provided the home can meet your needs, has a suitable room available and falls within our contract and pricing arrangements.

All homes must be registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI). However, this does not mean that the home will be approved by us. This will only happen once the home has been visited by one of our contract officers and the home has met our specific criteria.

We have provided details of approved homes in Croydon under "Council-approved care homes" and "Approved care homes for older people". However, you may wish to consider moving to a home beyond Croydon, for example if your family lives in a different part of the country and you wish to be near them. If so, please discuss this with your care manager.

There are lots of things to consider when you are choosing a suitable care home, to help with this, we have provided some "Tips on choosing a care home".
