London Borough of Croydon

Looked after children's education (LACE)

This service is primarily for looked after children who are the responsibility of Croydon although advice is given regarding looked after children placed in Croydon by other boroughs. For further details or requests for help contact the manager below. There are no charges for services.

There are approximately 450 looked after children placed in Croydon schools, with a large number being the responsibility of other authorities. Some Croydon looked after children are placed in other boroughs or parts of the country, and there are significant numbers of unaccompanied asylum seekers, particularly in the Key Stage 4 age range. Approximately 60% of Year 11 students are from this group.

The team provide a range of services including:

  • support to Croydon's children's homes
  • surgeries for social work teams
  • an annual award ceremony for looked after children
  • training and advice for teachers, social workers, carers and other professionals as well as for the young people themselves
  • homework and curriculum support for some children
  • primary/secondary transition support
  • help with reading and literacy through the reading champion
  • tracking and monitoring Croydon's looked after children in terms of education
  • support with educational issues and careers post 16 years through the Leaving Care team education tutor.

We also have good links with the Connexions adviser working with the Leaving Care and Independence (LCIS) team. The Connexions advisor works primarily with children who are in Year 11 or older. Please contact the LACE team manager for further details.
