Action for blind people

A national charity which aims to enable blind and partially sighted people to enjoy equal opportunities in every aspect of their lives through work, leisure, housing and support (details below).

Age Concern

Concerned with the needs and aspirations of older people aged 55+. Age Concern Croydon has produced a very helpful online directory of services which you can find on their website (see associated link).

Calibre

An audio book library service which sends books through the post. They have over 7,000 titles available, including over 1,000 children's titles. This service is free of charge (details below).

Community alarm services

Croydon Careline is a community alarm service offering you help at the touch of button, including assistive technology such as telelcare (see associate link).

Croydon libraries

The libraries, including the mobile library, offer a range of talking books as well as books in large print and braille. There is also a free home library service (details below).

Croydon Voluntary Association for the Blind (CVAB)

The CVAB offers a wide variety of services each week including lunch clubs, art, pottery, yoga, keep fit, dancing and socials. Transport is provided for most activities (details below). 

Counselling is also available to help people adjust to their sight loss. All members have the option to be contacted regularly by volunteers on their Telephone Care Line.

A local talking newspaper is produced each week and a monthly large print newsletter is also available.

Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB)

The RNIB offers a wide range of services relating to visual impairment including equipment, medical help line, legal advice and benefits information (details below).

It also offers a talking book service for people who find that other audio library services do not meet their needs. The RNIB has a CD and tape library which plays specifically on their own machines. They have a wide range of titles available, and books are sent through the post.

Staying put

Staying put helps older, disabled or other vulnerable people who need advice and assistance on carrying out minor repairs or adaptations to their homes (see associated link).

The Talking Newspaper Association of the United Kingdom

A wide range of newspapers and magazine publications on audio cassette and CD. Publications are sent through the post. There is a subscription charge for this service (details below).

Travel services

Travel services deal with applications and queries relating to taxicards, blue badges and the freedom pass (details below).
