Age Concern
Concerned with the needs and aspirations of older people aged 55+. Age Concern Croydon has produced a very helpful online directory of services which you can find on their website (see associated link).
Disabled Living Foundation
Providing older and disabled people with equipment solutions to help them lead independent lives. They aim to help people achieve greater mobility and independence and to confront barriers excluding them from living a full and productive life at home, at work and in their leisure time. They provide a helpline for professionals and the public (details below).
Disability Croydon
Provides support for community projects and social enterprises run by people with disabilities (details below). Their 'D for Disability' helpline gives information and advice on disability related matters. They also offer a number of other services including:
- alternative format service
- a bulletin giving updates on current disability issues
- RADAR keys for accessible toilets
- professional advocacy
- 'Have Your Say' consultation project
- disability equality training and access consultancy
- training in assistive computer technology
Multiple Sclerosis Society
The Croydon branch provides self help groups, respite care and welfare support for members and their families, both practical and emotional. They provide information about all aspects of MS and organise social events and outings (see associated link).
Additional information
The Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation (RADAR) has published a booklet called 'If only I'd known that a year ago' which is aimed at newly disabled people and those whose situation has changed. It costs £12.60 and can be obtained by calling 020 7250 3222 or logging onto the RADAR website (see associated link).
