Local and national organisations and helplines

Alzheimer's Society Croydon provides support to carers and signposting to services as well as short breaks for carers of older people with dementia. On our instruction they can carry out statutory carer's assessments.

Carer to Carer is a local organisation that is run by carers for carers on a voluntary basis. It offers a wide range of activities such as support groups, advice and information, a regular newsletter, outings and complementary therapies.

Carers' Information Service provides an enquiry service for carers and professionals on any aspect of caring. It produces a range of free publications including a bi-monthly newsletter, Carers' News, a series of regularly updated factsheets and How To... A Guide For Carers in Croydon. There are also regular training courses, monthly outreach information sessions and outings for carers.

Carers UK is a national campaigning, policy and information organisation for all carers. They run a helpline for carers on Wednesdays and Thursdays 10am - 12noon and 2pm - 4pm.

Charging Helpline provides assistance with financial assessments and completion of related forms. Opening times: Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm.

Cranstoun Drug Services run a family, friends and carers support group providing a 12-week programme for those affected by the substance misuse of somebody else. The programme explores basic drug and alcohol awareness, the impact of drug use on mental health and an understanding of co-dependency and boundaries. The programme helps you develop stress management skills and explores what to do in an emergency.

Crossroads is a local branch of the national charity. Trained support workers provide care at home for adults and children with a disability or illness to give their carer a break. They also offer palliative care and a Saturday Club for physically disabled children.

Disability Benefits Helpline offers free expert and confidential advice for people with disabilities and their carers. Opening times: Monday to Friday 8.30am - 6.30pm and Saturday 9am - 1pm.

The 'Caring for Someone' section on the Directgov website provides the widest range of government information and services for carers.

Direct Payment Support Service offers advice and information on receiving direct payments to pay for assessed social care services arranged by you in place of services you would otherwise have received through the council.

Mind in Croydon provides a wide range of services to people with mental health problems and their relatives and carers. These include advice and information, counselling, help with welfare benefits, advocacy, day care, work opportunities and a furniture project. Mind maintains the online guide to mental health services in Croydon. It has also produced highly regarded training materials including videos, DVDs and training packs. Multiple Sclerosis Society, Croydon branch, provides self help groups, respite care and welfare support for members and their families, both practical and emotional. They provide information about all aspects of MS and organise social events and outings.

Off The Record Young Carers Support Project is for young people from the age of six (maximum of 18 at point of referral) who look after or help to look after a family member with an illness, disability or a drug, alcohol or mental health problem. It offers home visits, information, advice, advocacy, holiday grants, a volunteer befriending scheme and help with school issues. There are regular activities, outings and holidays, a weekly youth club and a learning support club.

Rethink Croydon Carers' Support Project provides support, advice, advocacy, information, education and training to relatives and friends of people with severe mental health problems. They also run three carer support groups which meet monthly.

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers provides information, advice and support services to carers throughout the UK.

Welfare Benefits Hotline gives free expert and confidential advice about all welfare benefits to Croydon residents only. Opening times: Monday 2pm - 7pm, Wednesday 11am - 2pm and Friday 9am - 12noon.

They also have a specialist service working with people over 60 anywhere in the Croydon area, which includes home visits.
