In addition to the services provided under "Organisations providing short breaks" there is a range of other services which provide respite for carers of people with learning disabilities.
Residential short breaks
The council provides opportunities for people with learning disabilities to spend time in small residential respite units. This allows carers to have a break from their caring responsibilities and at the same time the person with learning disabilities can experience time away from the family setting, making new friends and helping to prepare for a time when they will move on in the future.
Support in the family home
Support workers will support the person with learning disabilities in the family home, giving carers the opportunity to go out to do other things.
This might be for a few hours or over a period of days, for example, when the carer and family may want to go away on holiday.
Outreach support
Support workers will support the person with learning disabilities to go out from the home and do interesting activities, giving the carer a break and space to do what they wish to do.
Day activities for people with learning disabilities
Day services for people with learning disabilities have been developing rapidly over the last few years. The centres and newly developed resource bases provide activities on site as well as the opportunity for people with learning disabilities to become involved in paid and voluntary work, education at local colleges and leisure activities.
Carer and voluntary sector surgeries (learning disabilities)
One-to-one meetings with Brenda Scanlan, Divisional Director Younger
Adults, for anyone who cares for someone with a learning disability or
people from voluntary sector organisations who work with them.
