General information for carers

Services that would be helpful to you may include
  • services that give you a break
  • emotional support from other carers or people who understand
  • help with caring tasks
  • help with household tasks
  • benefits advice
  • activities for the person you care for
  • information on local and national support organisations

We may consider requests to provide you with any service which will help you care or maintain your health and well-being. So it is important to discuss with us any ideas you have about what will help.

We can also tell you about local and national support organisations that you could contact. These may be able to help even if you do not qualify for assistance from us.

Short breaks for carers

To support the aims of the National Carers Strategy, the Government has provided specific funding to support carers. The Carers Special Grant has a specific aim of developing more and better short break and support services to carers. In Croydon, the grant has been used on a range of projects focussing on offering short breaks to carers. These include weekends, holiday breaks and specialist breaks for young carers and carers of people with mental health problems.

For a list of organisations and projects that provide respite, break and support services to carers refer to the Short breaks for carers page.

Time Allocation Scheme

Time may be allocated for a number of hours to provide the carer with a short break and the cared for person with a paid carer. In order to access this scheme you must have had a carer's assessment and meet the eligibility criteria for services. If you are eligible, your care manager will explain how this works.

Direct payments for services

Payments can be made to you and those you care for to arrange your own support and services instead of having them arranged for you by us. This is to give you more choice, control and flexibility in arranging who provides a service, what the service should be and how it is provided.

For more information about direct payments, please contact your care manager or social worker in the first instance. You could also contact the Direct Payments Support Service for information and advice at the address and contact number listed below. See also our Direct payments page for more information.
