General information for carers
Our aim is to assist carers to make more choices for themselves and have more control over their lives, for their own health and well-being in response to the Government’s National Strategy for Carers and the new carers' rights law. See the Carers' (Equal Opportunities) Act for summaries and the full act.
Who is a carer?
A carer is someone who looks after a family member, friend or neighbour who needs help because they are ill, frail or have a disability. A carer can be a child or an adult.
Many people who are caring for someone do not necessarily see themselves as 'carers'. Rather they are mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, partners, husbands, wives or neighbours. However, being identified as a carer can be important in helping you get the right support you need to look after the person you care for.
