Household waste collection

All the items you put out for collection are taken to landfill sites to be disposed of. All rubbish disposed of in this way adds to global warming. If we don't meet government and European targets in reducing landfill, we will be fined and the fine will be paid out of the council tax.

Everyone should reduce the amount of waste they produce and recycle or re-use anything they no longer want.

Our household waste and recycling collection is designed to help you do this. To find your collection date check your recycling calendar (which has been delivered to your home) or search by your road name using our new online refuse collection schedule.

How to report a missed bin collection

If your refuse is not collected on the scheduled day, or if you have any other problem with your collection, let us know by filling in the attached online form. We will try to have it collected by 4pm on the next working day.

You should move your bin to the edge of your property for collection the night before the bins are due to be emptied. Please don't leave it on the pavement or in the road.

If you find it difficult to move your bin to the edge of your property, you may be eligible for an assisted collection. Please contact us using the domestic refuse collection details below.

Wheeled bins

You will have received a wheeled refuse bin unless

  • you have too many steps or a steep slope
  • your bin store cupboard is too small
  • you live in private flats where you have to rent bulk rubbish containers

If you have been provided with a wheeled bin, we will only collect what is contained within that bin. You can use it for household rubbish which cannot be recycled, such as cooked food. Cold fire ash should be bagged.

Please help the bin collection crew work faster by turning your bin so that the handle faces the road. It is always better to push your bin rather than pull it. Hold the handle at the back, put your foot on the axle and tip it slightly towards you first.

The size of your bin is determined by the number of people in your household

  • 1-2 people: 140 litre (105 x 48 x 56cm)
  • 2-4 people: 180 litre (105 x 48 x 73cm)
  • 5-6 people: 240 litre (105 x 58 x73cm)
  • 7+ people: 340 litre (105 x 62 x 85cm)

The bin is the property of Croydon Council so when you move house, you must leave the bin at the property for the next resident. If it is damaged or is stolen, please contact us using the details below.
