Household recycling collection

Q1: What do I put out for collection in each box?

Blue box

Material Yes please No thanks
Paper and card
  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Paper of all sizes and colours
  • All envelopes
  • Wrapping paper (no foil)
  • Phonebooks - including Yellow Pages
  • Card and cardboard
  • Birthday and Christmas cards
  • Pizza boxes (and other food soiled boxes)
  • Any paper/card containing foil or metal
  • Tetra-pakTM (juice) cartons
  • Plastic-coated cardboard, polystyrene
Textiles and shoes
  • Clothes and linens
  • Shoes (tied in pairs) - dry and clean, please.
  • Duvets, pillows and cushions

Green box

Material Yes please No thanks
Mixed glass
  • All glass bottles and all glass jars. Please rinse first.
  • Any other glass items, including:
  • Mirrors
  • Sheet (window) glass
  • Drinking glasses
  • Pyrex
Tins and cans
  • Food cans
  • Drink cans

     Please rinse first.

  • Aerosol cans - empty and with no lids
  • Aluminium foil
  • Any other metal items
Plastic bottles
  • Plastic bottles only. Please remove lids, rinse and squash.
  • Any other plastic items including margarine tubs and yoghurt pots. These items can be recycled at your nearest Reuse and Recycling Centre (see Waste and Recycling Centres link at left)
  • Plastic bags – These cannot be recycled in the borough. Please reuse them.

Q2: What happens if I have more recycling than I can fit in my recycling boxes?

Extra materials can be put out for recycling in separate plastic bags - not bin liners - either on top of or next to your box.

If you find that you are continuously putting out more recycling than you can fit in your boxes, please contact us to order another (see below).

Q3: Should I put both boxes out for collection on the same day?

Yes. Both the green and blue box will be collected on the same day. See your collection calendar for your collection day. Collection will be bi-weekly on that day of the week. 

Please put your boxes out by 7am, at the edge of your property within arms' reach of the pavement.
