Why "Eco Citizens"?

Over the next few years, Croydon's town centre will begin to be transformed, with stunning new buildings designed to high environmental standards and a move to more pedestrian-friendly streets. Throughout the borough, and especially in our district centres such as Thornton Heath, Purley, Coulsdon and New Addington, new dwellings, shops and offices are being built to meet the council's forward-looking requirements for high standards of sustainable design including having at least 10% of the power come from low-carbon technologies on the building itself.

Some of the changes towards a more environmentally friendly town will be dramatic - the plans in Vision 2020 for a revitalised town centre, which Will Alsop's team brought to life during 2007 with images of a tree-lined Wellesley Road, will be very visible. Yet in terms of saving the planet, our popular loft and cavity wall insulation offer with British Gas or our new and expanding recycling services are just as exciting and important. And loft insulation will save you money, too.

This new eco city is forming around us and the aim of the "Eco Citizens" programme is to encourage and recognise the pioneer eco citizens who are helping to make it happen.
