A conservation area is an area of special architectural or historical interest, as designated under Section 69 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.

The designation of conservation areas, which is done to help preserve and enhance their character and appearance, is the responsibiilty of the local authority.
