Croydon healthy schools scheme

Croydon Healthy Schools Scheme is part of the National Healthy Schools Programme (NHSP), a partnership between Department of Health and Department of Education and Science.

The aims of the NHSP are:
• to support children and young people in developing healthy behaviours;
• to help raise pupil achievement;
• to help reduce health inequalities; and
• to help promote social inclusion.

The NHSP is responsible for supporting schools to achieve National Healthy Schools Status (NHSS). The Government aims that by Dec 2009 75% of schools will have achieved NHSS and the remainder working towards.

In order to achieve NHSS and be recognised as a 'Healthy School' schools have to meet the criteria in the following four core themes:

 Personal, social and health education, including sex and relationship education and drug education (including alcohol, tobacco and volatile substance abuse: PSHE provides pupils with the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their lives.

•  Healthy Eating: Pupils have the confidence, skills and understanding to make healthy food choices. Healthy and nutritious food and drink is available across the school day.

•  Physical Activity: Pupils are provided with a range of opportunities to be physically active. They understand how physical activity can help them to be healthier, and how physical activity can improve and be part of their everyday life.

•  Emotional health and well-being: Promoting positive emotional health and well-being to help pupils understand and express their feelings, and build confidence and emotional resilience and therefore the capacity to learn

The Croydon Healthy Schools Scheme is a partnership between Croydon Primary Care Trust and the Local Authority. A team of professionals from these services are able to support and advise schools seeking to achieve NHSS and become a 'Healthy School'.
