Background information
Most schools in Croydon have their school meals provided by Eden Foodservice through a contract organised by the local authority. For schools in the contract the price of a meal in a primary school is £1.90. The price of a meal in a secondary school is £2.05. If your child attends a school that is not in the contract please contact the school for further information.
All meals are freshly prepared in schools on a daily basis. The menus meet the Government's food-based and nutrient-based standards for school lunches. They cover a three-week period and are then repeated. Over the three-week period meals provide daily between 30-40% of a child's recommended daily allowance (RDA) of nutrients. These standards became law in primary schools in September 2008 and will become law in secondary, special schools and pupil referral units in September 2009.
Sustainability plays a key role in the development of the menus, which now provide:
- Red Tractor Assured meat - meat can be traced from "farm to fork"
- Marine Stewardship Council-assured fish fingers - fish sourced from a sustainable fishery
- free range eggs.
They also provide:
- two portions of vegetables
- freely available bread and salad
- a freshly prepared fruit platter as an alternative to the dessert of the day.
