- School Meals - background information

The price of a meal in a primary school is £1.75. The price of a meal in a secondary school is £1.95, this represents the larger portion sizes served. The new menu which commenced in September 2007 has seen all shaped and the majority of processed products removed. Food is freshly baked and freshly prepared in the school kitchens. The recipes are developed to ensure reduced salt, fat and sugar content and increased fibre and other essential nutrients such as iron and zinc. The menus have been nutritionally analysed and overall not only do they meet but in some cases exceed the most recent nutrient based guidelines (Caroline Walker Trust) for school meals. Home-made bread is made on a daily basis within schools, and a selection of salads are available. For dessert cheese and biscuits are also offered.
