It is with shock and a deep sense of loss that Croydon Council announces the untimely death of the borough's Mayor, Councillor Jonathan Driver.
Please read the Council's Press Release for further information.
The Mayor is the borough's first citizen and represents Croydon at some 600 civic, ceremonial and social engagements during the year.
Croydon has long maintained a high regard for the tradition of the Mayor. The importance of this position is widely recognised and remains the highest civic office that the people of the borough can confer. The Mayor takes precedence over everyone else except the Sovereign or the Sovereign's representative.
Typical mayoral activities include:
- receiving delegations from around the world
- welcoming new business to the borough and often opening their local premises
- visiting residents on their 100th birthday, reading out the Queen's greetings and offering congratulations on behalf of the borough
- becoming honorary president or chairman to around 20 voluntary organisations and chairing their annual meetings
- hosting receptions in the Mayor's Parlour to thank volunteers for their invaluable community work
- acting as guest speaker at formal dinners for all kinds of local groups and organisations
- attending concerts and engagements involving local schools or drama groups
- chairing all meetings of the full council
- helping to raise money for good causes and local charities.
Each year the Mayor uses his or her term in office to raise funds for charitable causes. The Mayor's charities for 2008-2009 are the Croydon Sea Cadets and TheCause 2000, which provides support to the diverse people living the borough.
