Croydon Museum Volunteers Policy

Croydon Museum and Heritage service aims to improve the quality of life for everyone in Croydon: to promote a sense of place, a feeling of belonging, local pride, and to enhance Croydon's image regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The service will work with students and volunteers when this is appropriate to meet the following aims:

  • to deliver specific short projects that is part of the Service Forward Plan priorities for the year
  • to help staff to manage events which require stewarding
  • to gain the benefit of varied perspectives, experience, skills and expertise not represented amongst staff
  • to help staff build bridges to particular groups in the community and develop advocacy for the service
  • to provide support for quality museum and heritage training
  • to provide access to museum experience for people from groups currently under-represented in museum work

The service will not take on volunteers or students when:

  • there are no project planned that is suitable to the skills and experience of the person applying
  • there is no suitable member of staff with time to supervise the project adequately
  • the administration costs of the placement cannot be met by the service budget
  • the person applying is under 18 years of age
  • the placement is to last for less than two weeks (except in the case of event stewarding)

When working with volunteers or students we will:

  • encourage staff and other volunteers to be open and welcoming to new volunteers and students
  • provide a contact member of staff who will be responsible for the work programme, induction, training and support as appropriate
  • provide induction and familiarisation to the service, health and safety instruction, and information as appropriate
  • be available to support and advise on the project and to listen to any problems that may arise
  • provide a short report or reference on the project if required and keep records of people who have worked with us for future reference
  • evaluate the project or placement with the volunteer or student and listen to feedback
  • recognise the contribution of volunteers and students in any project
  • implement the council equal opportunities policy at all levels
  • make sure volunteers and students are properly insured by the council while working for the service

Volunteers and students working with the service must agree to:

  • respect the instructions on security, health and safety and standards of practice that they are given and work by them
  • respect other staff and the public and conform to the standards set by the service for appropriate dress and customer care
  • work in line with the council's equal opportunities policy
  • keep in contact with the supervising member of staff and tell them of any changes in their work plans or difficulties in carrying out the work

Where volunteers or students may be working with children, the law may require us to ask for a police check. This will always be discussed in advance with the person concerned.
