Council and democracy

The register, also called the electoral roll, is published in two versions: 

Full register

The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote and is used for elections. Councillors, MPs, MEPs and registered political parties can use the full register for electoral purposes. The local council and the police can use it for law enforcement. Government departments can purchase a copy for staff vetting and crime prevention. Finally, credit card agencies can use the full register for vetting applications for credit.

The full register is updated monthly between December and September through rolling registration.

Edited register

The edited register does not include the names of voters who have opted not to be included. The edited register can be sold to anyone and used for any purpose, including direct marketing. If you do not want your details sold on to anyone else, you should tick the opt-out box.

If you do not opt out, your details will be sold to direct marketing companies and anyone else who wants to buy them.  

Inspection of the register

The government has introduced arrangements for inspecting the full register to ensure that information provided can be safeguarded. The full register can only be inspected, under supervision, at the Central Library, Katharine Street, Croydon, and at the Electoral Services Office in the Town Hall. It is an offence to make copies other than by hand written notes, and even then there are strict restrictions on what the information can be used for. Misuse of data from the full register could lead to a fine of up to £5,000.
