The Year 10 pupils from Addington High School, which has special arts status, visited the wood in July to investigate and experience the rich and diverse flora and fauna that sits on their doorstep. For some it was a first-time visit while for others looking at the wood through a camera lens provided a new and close-up view of the habitat.
The Into the Woods exhibition forms part of the Capital Woodlands Project, a three-year London Biodiversity Partnership project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project, which comes to an end in December, has aimed to raise appreciation of London's woodlands and to encourage people to make the most of them. It has focused on six flagship woodland areas around the capital, including Birch and Rowdown Woods in New Addington, undertaking access, biodiversity, community and training work. This has included improving security and access to the woods, as well as working with schools and the wider community to raise awareness.
Councillor Steve Hollands, cabinet member for culture and sport, said: "This project has given these students the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents whilst discovering the natural beauty of a piece of woodland that sits right on their doorstep. The wonderful photographs and paintings they have created will also open up the woods to all those who visit the exhibition and will hopefully inspire them to get out and explore their local woodland for themselves."
The exhibition of 20 painting and 10 photographs will be displayed in the Clocktower court area from 1 to 19 December.
