Many primary schools in Croydon have introduced the teaching of modern foreign and community languages into their curriculum and one of Woodside's teachers has spearheaded the introduction of language learning in the school. CALAT was asked to refresh and develop the teachers' skills to allow them to develop French lessons.
Learning a language at such an early age teaches the children valuable transferable linguistic skills, expands cultural awareness and establishes a valuable foundation that can be built upon and developed when a child goes to secondary school.
Feedback from the teachers was that the course had been enjoyable and fun. Ruth Johnston, Woodside's deputy head, said: "We are thrilled with the training delivered by CALAT and the course ran very smoothly."
Croydon Council's cabinet member for children's services and adult learning, Councillor Maria Gatland, said: "Learning a language with CALAT opens up a world of opportunities. They offer an extensive range of courses in twelve languages at a variety of locations and times across the borough. Make 2008 the year that you start to learn a new language!"
