The warning comes after trading standards officers joined local police teams on National Rogue Trader Day (Wednesday) to caution local residents about the problems associated with doorstep crime such as distraction burglary and rogue traders.
The national day of action saw seven teams of officers take to the borough's streets to talk to tradesmen and residents.
As well as ensuring that any work being carried out was undertaken by reputable tradesmen, they advised residents about allowing traders to cold call them and to reject apparent bargain prices for jobs such as driveway and roof repairs.
Councillor Steve O'Connell, cabinet member for safety and cohesion, said: "This is the latest in a series of initiatives on doorstep crime being carried out by the council's trading standards service to help protect local people from rogue traders.
"Residents need to be on their guard when dealing with cold callers and should not agree to work on the spot. They should always get two or more estimates and wherever possible chose tradesmen by recommendation or use tradesmen listed on www.trustmark.org.uk."
Anyone who is concerned that they have been duped or have had suspect workmen knock at their door alleging that their roof, driveway, gutters, gardens or any other parts of the home need work are asked to contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or email trading.standards@croydon.gov.uk.
