To celebrate the National Year of Reading and promote National Join a Library Day on Saturday 26 April, there will be free children's events in three of Croydon's libraries.
The National Year of Reading is a nationwide campaign which aims to promote the power of reading to change the lives of individuals and communities. Libraries across the borough will be organising events and activities throughout the year to encourage everyone to share the pleasure of reading with families and friends.
At Croydon's Central Children's Library and Purley Library, actor Anthony Pedley will be performing 'A Taste of Dahl', an autobiographical adventure featuring children's author, Road Dahl's most famous characters. He will bring to life the man and his craft with characters from books such as the BFG, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and George's Marvellous Medicine.
The show is for families with children aged 7-11 and will take place from 11am to 12noon at Croydon Children's Library and 2.30 to 3.30pm at Purley Library. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
On the same day (26 April) South Norwood Library is organising an outdoor story time at 11am in Grangewood Park. Families are invited to come and listen to stories under the trees and go on a nature trail. Meet at the library at 10.30am for a walk to the park or in the park, next to the playground at 11am. Everyone is welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult and all are advised to bring a coat in case it rains!
Croydon Council's cabinet member for culture and sport, Councillor Steve Hollands, said: "These fun events are the first of many to celebrate the National Year of Reading. Encouraging children to read is especially important as it can open up a whole new world of opportunity. Bringing children to library events is a first-rate way of showing them how much fun and enjoyment can be had from story-telling and books."
