The Babes in Arms reading group will aim to allow the adults to take part in a grown-up discussion on a variety of enjoyable reads while their youngsters are entertained with board books and toys.

The group is designed to appeal to those who enjoy reading and discussing new books but who are unable to make it along to regular book groups because of their childcare commitments. It is being started up as part of the ongoing 2008 National Year of Reading initiative.

The new club will run once a month on a Friday morning at the library in Farm Fields, South Croydon. There is no need for advanced booking. The next meeting will take place on Friday 17 October at 10am.

Councillor Steve Hollands, cabinet member for culture and sport said: "The group is the perfect opportunity for book-loving parents with pre-school children. They get to indulge in a bit of grown-up conversation about their favourite books over a cup of tea and a biscuit while the little ones are playing happily alongside."
