The council is embarking on a six-week programme to replace all 267 computers at libraries and youth clubs across the borough.
The new PCs offer faster internet access, updated software and USB ports for using memory sticks and cameras.
They also have DVD writers, word processing package MS Office (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and media player software Real Player.
In Central Library, in Katharine Street, and in branch libraries throughout the borough, PCs that are linked to scanners will have special magnification and speech software, called Zoomtext, to help the visually impaired make full use of the new facilities.
Councillor Gavin Barwell, cabinet member for resources and customer services, said: "Responding to our residents' needs, the new PCs offer up-to-the-minute technology and are faster and easier to use. The replacement programme demonstrates the council's continued commitment to providing first-class services to the community."
The new equipment is one of the many benefits negotiated in the recent Capgemini contract extension, including saving the council £1m per annum for IT Services.
