Andy Day, 53, a planner, is running his fifth London Marathon and will be raising money for local charity, the Lisa Thaxter Trust. He is a trustee for the charity, which raises money for teenagers and children with cancer and their families and has been fundraising for them for over a decade. The money raised this year will be partly used to continue the funding of cancer research at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Andy, who lives in Coulsdon, trains by running over Farthing Downs and says: "Training is going well but I'm getting fed up with pasta. My work colleagues make sure I don't sneak a cream cake or sugar in my tea. Oh, how I look forward to 14 April - line up those cakes!"

David Kellond, 28, works in pensions and will be running the London Marathon for the first time. Originally from Oxfordshire, he joined the council a year ago and now lives in Brighton where he trains along the coastline. He is running in aid of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital. His stepsister was murdered three years ago and he and his family pledged to raise £50,000 for their new children's hospital and to name a new playroom in her memory.

If he achieves his target time of 4.5 hours, David will collapse in a hotel room in central London after the marathon and do "absolutely nothing".

Finance manager Rob Harrison, 48, is a veteran runner with 33 marathons to his name. His best time is 2.43 hours and his training includes running home from work in Croydon to his home in Carshalton. This year he is running for the MS Society and he will follow his tradition of going down the pub, followed by a curry, immediately after the race.

Croydon Council's cabinet member for culture and sport, Councillor Steve Hollands, said: "I feel nothing but admiration for anyone who takes part in the London Marathon. Good luck to these council employees. I hope they finish the race in good time and reach their fundraising targets."
