As health and safety considerations increase, opportunities for children to take risks while playing are reducing and the play day is designed to give young people a chance to experience fun but in a challenging environment.
The free activities on offer include wall climbing, a sports tournament and team games as well as pottery, music and arts and crafts. Toys to You, the new mobile toy library, will provide play opportunities for preschool children.
Croydon's cabinet member for children's services and adult learning, Councillor Maria Gatland, explains: "Sometimes today's culture prevents young people from playing alone outside. However, children need to learn how to manage risk and how to deal with everyday situations for themselves. Through this event we want to show that playtime can be both exciting and uncertain and how adventurous play can help young people learn how to face everyday challenges."
The event forms part of the national Play Day campaign co-ordinated by Play England. This year the theme is ‘Give us a go' with the aim of encouraging children and young people into exciting and stimulating play.
