While not often associated with matters floral, Croydon's beautiful displays won last year's London in Bloom in the Large City category, which applies to towns with a population of more than 200,000 people. This success ensured that the south London borough was nominated for the same category in Britain in Bloom, pitching its charms against Sheffield and Belfast.

Britain in Bloom is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and is the largest campaign of its kind in Europe. However, the competition is not just about flowers, it is about encouraging communities to work together to make long-term improvements to their local area. Judges will be looking for evidence of good conservation practice and a high standard of cleanliness as well as environmental projects that involve the community.

Leader of Croydon Council, Councillor Mike Fisher, said: "Many people don't realise how much of Croydon is made up of parks and open spaces. Nearly a third of the borough is designated green belt and open land - we even have sheep grazing the meadows of Happy Valley.

"The borough's fantastic achievement in last year's London in Bloom proved what a vibrant and colourful place Croydon is. Now, I urge all those who live or work in the borough to build on this success and help lead Croydon towards victory in Britain in Bloom."

As in previous years, the council will run its own Croydon in Bloom competition and will be encouraging residents and businesses to brighten up their outside space and contribute towards a greener borough. The closing date for entries is 23 June. Visit www.croydon.gov.uk/croydoninbloom for more information.
