Croydon Council and the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) are providing training sessions to give builders practical new eco-skills for domestic property refurbishment.

The training will help builders stay ahead of the building regulation game, showing them simple ways to introduce fuel-saving additions during renovation work.

Trainer Russell Smith, from Parity Projects, local award winner for sustainable refurbishment, will use examples from his own semi-detached Victorian house in Sutton, where he has reduced his fuel bills by 75% and water use by 60%.

The first session takes place on Wednesday 14 May at the Hilton Hotel, Waddon Way, Croydon from 6.30 to 9.30pm.

The second session takes place on Monday 19 May at Russell's eco-refurbished house in Sutton.

Russell will talk through simple and cost-effect methods for fuel efficiency focusing on: insulation, draught-proofing, glazing, cost-effective renewable energy solutions and rainwater harvesting.

Cllr Chris Wright, cabinet member for planning, said: "With rising fuel prices and concern about global warming and climate change, demand is increasing for energy-efficient housing. Furthermore, with more stringent building regulations on the horizon for domestic refurbishment to fall in the line with the energy-efficiency requirements already in existence for new builds, it makes sense for builders to keep ahead of the game and to learn the new skills that will be required in the future."

Builders interested in joining either training session, which cost £20 each, should contact the FMB on 020 7242 2200 or email LondonRegion@fmb.org.uk
