Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson's visit also marks the start of a national cultural programme of activities which will lead up to the Games in 2012 and leave a legacy far beyond.
While in the borough Dame Tanni will give an inspirational talk to families and learners at Braithwaite Hall, in Katharine Street, and afterwards she will be signing copies of her book "Aim High" at the Central Library.
The event is part of Family Learning Week activities in Croydon and celebrates the culmination of the 'Aim High' project where local people took part in cultural activities to mark the Olympic handover.
A book containing a selection of work about 'achieving against adversity' and produced as part of the project will be presented to the popular Paralympian, and learners from CALAT will read excerpts from their work.
Students from the Brit School have organised a performance for Dame Tanni, which is based around their work with Demelza House School for terminally ill children.
Councillor Steve Hollands, cabinet member for culture and sport, said: "We are delighted to welcome Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson to Croydon. With the handover of the Games from Beijing to London these are extremely exciting times for culture and sport. And I'm sure Dame Tanni's visit will inspire and motivate Croydon residents to get involved.
"This is just the beginning of the Olympic and Paralympic journey for London and we hope that over the next four years there will be opportunities for our communities to participate in sport and culture, and share in the opportunities of the Games."
