Calling all green-fingered residents and businesses, now is the time to start planting out in readiness for the annual Croydon in Bloom competition.

Every year, Croydon Council runs the competition, which forms part of the London in Bloom campaign organised by the Royal Horticultural Society. However, this year is different because, as the borough did so well in the 2007 London in Bloom competition, we have been nominated to represent the capital in the Britain in Bloom awards. It is a chance for us all to show that Croydon stands out and to achieve national recognition for our efforts.

The competition is not just about flowers, it is about encouraging communities to work together to make long-term improvements to their local area. Individuals, groups, businesses and organisations are being asked to make a difference to where they live and to discover a greener borough.

Full details of the Croydon in Bloom 2008 categories can be found on the council's website at www.croydon.gov.uk/croydoninbloom. They include:

  • Front Garden Award - awarded to a private residence, includes balconies;
  • Community Garden Award - awarded to a group for the best communal area;
  • The Business Premises Award;
  • Best Conservation Project;
  • The Bloomin' Pub & Restaurant Award.

This year, there are several new categories, including Best School Garden and the Allotment Awards.

Croydon Council's cabinet member for culture and sport, Councillor Steve Hollands, said: "It is fantastic that our efforts last year achieved a nomination for Britain in Bloom, but this competition isn't just about prizes. The real benefit lies in working together to make lasting improvements to where we live or work.

"Whatever space you have - a balcony, yard or garden - whether you garden alone, with a group or run a business, take this opportunity to get involved and let's create some pride in our local environment."

The closing date for entries is 23 June and local and regional judging will take place in July with Britain in Bloom judges visiting the borough in August.

It is easy to make a nomination, visit www.croydon.gov.uk/croydoninbloom or pick up an entry form, available from local libraries, One Stop receptions and leisure centres. Many local businesses will also be distributing the forms and the May edition of council magazine, Your Croydon, will include an application form.
