The search is on for Croydon's best pubs and clubs as the council launches its annual Best Bar None scheme.
Now in its fifth year, the innovative scheme promotes responsible standards of management amongst Croydon's licensed premises, with the overall aim of reducing drink-related crime and disorder associated with the night-time economy.
The 2008 awards will be launched at the Black Sheep Bar, last year's overall winner, on Monday 7 April.
Owners and licensees from pubs, clubs and bars across the borough are invited to take part in the scheme, which is run by the council and the police.
Establishments taking part will have to prove they have safe and well managed premises when staff from the council's licensing department and the police visit to carry out an inspection, checking out door policy, health and safety, staff training, customer care and ways of dealing with disorder.
Those that meet the required standards will be presented with a certificate and plaque at an award's ceremony later this year.
An independent panel of judges will select the overall winners and runners up which will be announced on the night. Categories include best bar, best club and best pub.
Mike Pilgrim, acting director of environment, culture and public protection, said: "The fact that Croydon's Best Bar None scheme is now in its fifth year just goes to show how popular and successful it has become. It offers the opportunity for licensees within the borough to prove they run safe and well managed bars, pubs and clubs."
Croydon Borough Commander, Chief Supt. Mark Gore, said: "The facts speak for themselves. Since the launch of the Best Bar None scheme in 2003 we have seen a significant reduction in alcohol related crime and disorder in and around licensed premises in the town centre. We applaud those establishments that have already signed up to the scheme and invite all licensed premises in the borough to demonstrated their commitment to a safer and more attractive nightlife by taking part."
