Croydon Council is training the volunteers to teach other tenants how to be more energy efficient.

It follows findings that tenants were both uncertain of how to use their heating controls properly and even less reluctant to ask for help.

The initiative will help tenants reduce un-necessarily high bills as well as waste energy as prices continue to soar

In response, the council has held a series of on-going ‘energy champion’ events where people can learn how to read gas and electricity meters, set heating controls and understand  about the most cost effective way of paying bills.

Offering this assistance in the form of a local resident that tenants know has proved highly successful.

The majority of tenants’ associations in the borough now have at least one energy champion who can pass their knowledge onto other tenants.

Cllr Dudley Mead, portfolio holder for housing, said: “We’re doing a lot to make our buildings more energy efficient but residents have an important role to play by being more energy conscious.

“This is a practical way of getting the message across that energy efficiency is about common sense.”

If you would like to volunteer to be an energy champion, please ring John Healy on 0208 726 6100 ex 63888.
