Counterfeit vodka seized in local shops

The fake Kirov and Glen's vodka and Clipper lighters were discovered in 13 outlets during inspections throughout July and August.

The move came after neighbouring boroughs had reported the potentially hazardous items being offered to the public in some of their local shops.

The content of counterfeit vodka is often unknown. In previous seizures trading standards officers have discovered high levels of methanol, which can cause blindness.

The lighters are copies of the well-known Clipper brand, renowned for its barrel shape. It's common for these poorly-manufactured fakes to have inferior casing, which explodes when dropped. There is also a risk of the button sticking, which can cause the flame to remain lit indefinitely, potentially causing burns or setting fire to clothes.

Councillor Steve O'Connell, deputy leader and cabinet member for safety and cohesion said: "These counterfeits are a real risk to health and anyone concerned that they may have purchased them should let us know as soon as possible. The goods are being sold to retailers for cash with no questions asked and then sold to the public without any concern for their safety. Any retailer found selling them in Croydon risks prosecution, a hefty fine and irreparable damage to the reputation of their business".

Local residents are asked to report any suspicious items to ConsumerDirect on 08454 04 05 06 or email trading.standards@croydon.gov.uk
