The Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF) and Youth Capital Fund (YCF) provide resources for young people to improve the youth activities and facilities in their area. They:
- give a voice to young people, especially disadvantaged young people, in relation to 'things to do and places to go'
- improve resources and facilities in Croydon in line with what young people want
- provide opportunities for young people to develop their confidence, skills and abilities
- encourage young people to engage with services and get involved in their community.
The Youth Opportunity Fund provides money for a wide range of activities - as long as these are deemed constructive.
The Youth Capital Fund can to be used, in conjunction with the YOF, to improve facilities, buildings and equipment.
Up to 5% of the grants can be used to support young people to develop the skills and experience they need to manage the funds. In Croydon this figure is £16,115.

How much money is involved?
For 2008-2009 Croydon has been allocated £207,900 for the YOF and £179,700 for the YCF.
What are the conditions?
- young people, themselves, must apply for the funds
- funds must be spent on projects and facilities in Croydon for young people aged 13-19
- funds must benefit as many youth as possible, especially those who are disadvantaged or often miss out on opportunities
- applicants must go through an official process and provide references to support their application
- projects need to be safe, legal and positive
- projects must fulfil one or more of the 'Every Child Matters' 5 Outcomes
- evidence must be provided on the uses and outcomes of the funds.
Who decides where the money goes?
The funds are allocated by a management team of young people on behalf of young people in Croydon.
When will this happen?
Now. This year's allocation needs to be spent by the end of March 2009. The deadlines to apply to the funds are:
- Round 1 - Thursday 5 June 2008 at noon (decision released in August 2008)
- Round 2 - Thursday 6 November 2008 at noon (decision released in January 2009).
The YOF/YCF is a rolling grant programme that goes on until 2011.
