- Independent visitor training

When we receive a satisfactory application form, you will be asked to come for an initial interview. Following this interview, if we consider that you may be suitable for the role of an independent visitor, we send off for references. We will also carry out background checks including an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.
If your references are satisfactory, you will be asked to attend seven assessed training sessions. If you get through the training, the final part of the recruitment process is a panel interview with staff from Children's Services. If the panel approves your application to become an independent visitor, we will try to match you with a young person. The minimum time commitment for this role is one year after you are matched with a young person.
The training sessions are held in the Town Hall, Katharine Street on Tuesday evenings from 6.00 pm - 8.00 pm.
Summer 2008 - 3 June to 15 July
* Parking is limited in and around the Town Hall so allow plenty of time to find a suitable parking place.
The training covers such topics as:
- attachment and loss
- the asylum process
- child protection
- boundaries
- listening skills
- the role, rights and responsibilities of the independent visitor
You will be expected to attend all the training sessions and to complete written work after each session which forms part of our evaluation process. You will also be asked to complete an evaluation form after each session which helps us improve the training course in the future.
