Youth Involvement
Housing has a Youth Provision Budget of £200,000 per annum to fund activities and facilities on Council owned estates. Applications for funding of projects can be made each October.
Individual residents, community and youth groups, service providers such as the Youth Service and charitable organisations can apply for funding from this budget. The proviso is that the money must be spent on projects which benefit Council tenants and leaseholders.
Please register your interest by contacting us using contact details at the bottom of the page.
Applications will be assessed by a panel of adults and young residents, supported by Officers from Housing Management and Youth Services to ensure applications are processed without bias.
To date this budget has funded the following range of projects:
- play and leisure equipment
- sports coaching
- junior and senior youth clubs
- summer scheme for 5 – 12 year olds
- mobile recreation for young people
- youth club equipment
- youth mediation
- National Play Day
The Housing Department’s Youth Strategy aims to address the following key issues facing our estates:
- The lack of youth involvement in local decision making
- The lack of youth provisions
- The lack of positive recognition
Our Youth Involvement Officer, who works in partnership with a number of agencies such as the Youth Service, Youth Offending Team, Play Place, Croydon Youth Development Trust and Environment, Cultural and Public Protection to develop estate based youth projects.
Partnership work with the Play Development Officer from Environment, Culture and Public Protection has led to the Council obtaining £884,000 from the Big Lottery Fund Children’s Play Programme to provide play facilities in Croydon.
The Youth Involvement Officer has secured £284,000 of this funding for facilities which will benefit Handcroft, Longheath Gardens, Walton Green and Whitehorse Road estates.
Funds from the Youth Provision Budget will also be used to provide supervised and family orientated activities. These activities will promote good health, physical well-being and social interaction for our residents.
We will continue to work closely with the Youth Service and other agencies to develop a Youth Strategy that effectively meets the needs of young people and communities on our estates.
